Sites running on HTTP and transmitting passwords or credit card data will be marked as unsecure in Chrome in early 2017

In the blog, Google Chrome Security Team announced the news that the browser, from January 2017, will mark all HTTP sites, which transmit passwords or credit card data, as unsecure. At the moment, Chrome displays the secure site icon with a green padlock, but the security team decided to rethink this process.

"From January 2017 (Chrome 56), we will mark the HTTP sites, which transmit passwords and credit card details, as unsecure, due to our long-term perspective for the marking of all HTTP sites as unsecure," said Emily Schechter, member of Chrome Security Team.

As a first step, the team plans to display the label «Not secure» in the browser.

The announcement also presents the results of studies related to the safety indicators. Further to the study, the lack of green padlock in the address bar of browser is not perceived by users as a notification that the site is unsafe. Chrome Security Team, building on the received information, is planning to make changes to the browser to make it clear to users that the HTTP sites do not provide data security.

Chrome 56 will be the first release where HTTP pages, which transmit passwords or credit card details, will be marked as unsafe. In later releases, HTTP warnings will also be extended to Incognito mode. Ultimately, all HTTP pages will have a red triangle, clearly signalling their insecurity.
